This is simply a journal of my food adventures, mainly in Vancouver, BC. Basically, a place for me to live out my long-time fantasy of being a restaurant reviewer. I hope that readers will find the reviews useful. I will include random bits about other foodie adventures like grocery and cookware shopping, cooking/baking projects, cooking classes, and eventually I’ll add a cartoon – The Adventures of Ha Gow, my little Chinese dim sum shrimp-filled dumpling dude. Foodies of the city, unite!

Junk Food Wars!
I have an idea for the ultimate potluck party: ultimate junk food inventions! Everyone should bring some ultimate junk food creation, with prizes for Creativity, and Best Taste. Maybe some random prize categories should be added, such as Most Complex, Best Food on a Stick, and Best Use of a Pork Product. I was inspired by a couple of posts I found on the internet. First, I saw a picture of the tornado potato, a whole potato, spiral cut, stuck on a stick, and deep fried...and dusted with cheesy powder, of course. This is apparently a fairly recent addition to the Korean street food scene, which is rife with all manner of junk food on a stick. I think it's brilliance on a stick; that's what I think! Then at the end of the article, it mentioned deep-fried Coca Cola! Apparently it was served at the Texas State Fair, and involves coke batter, deep-fried, topped with coke syrup drizzle, whipped cream, and a cherry. This is exactly the type of thing we need our best minds to be working on! What sort of junk food creativity has caught your eye recently?

The BF says he's had that potato somewhere but he's never been to south korea. clearly they stole the idea from either the u.s. or india!
"best use of a pork product"--heh heh!
Thanks, cakebrain, saabken and Ranger! I also heard from someone else who has seen the spiral potato outside of Korea - Mexico City, I think. Cakebrain, your blog is really great - thanks again for the T room post - the great coffeeshop/bakeware store on Broadway, past Alma. And I would LOVE to try a deep-fried twinkie and Mars bar...
Hi, this is kind of random, but I was googling Vancouver pies, when your blog came up. Your approach to food sounds similar to my own and I thought maybe you can help. I live in northern BC and I am trying to find a good bakey/pie specialty shop to deliver a pie to my daughter who is currently attending BCIT. March 14 is PI Day and I'd like to surprise her with a pie. She lives in New Westminster. Any recommendations you could give would be most appreciated. Thanks, Kaeleen
Hi Nancy. I was wondering if you could get in contact with me regarding some of your reviews. I don't see any contact info listed on your page.Restaurants@vancouver.com
thanks,

Two words: spam sushi! I'm told that it's actually (depressingly?) common in some areas of Hawaii.
Hi Kaeleen, Sorry, I don't know any pie places that can deliver, but what a fun idea to get a pie delivered on PI Day. You sound like the coolest mom ever. Good pie is a rather elusive thing for me anyhow, even without the delivery part. Last good slice of pie I had was at, of all places, ABC Country. I had their banana cream pie, which was flavourful, with a great crust.
Thanks urban[e]nomad! But I'm not sure spam sushi would count as junk food...but there must be someone out there snacking on SPAM, I guess. I don't want to think about it anymore, ew. lol
